Introducing myself
Hi, my name is Christina Pavlopoulou. I was born in Athens, capital of Greece. Currently, I am a PhD Candidate at the University of California, Riverside. I am working on query optimization for big data systems under the supervision of Professor Vassilis Tsotras.
For summer 2018, I will be working as an intern at Teradata in El Segundo. Going forward, I am always looking for exciting new internship opportunities in the area of database system development.
In 2015, I completed my master program in Computer Science and Technology at the same department. During my graduate studies I was member of Sense Lab researching team under the supervision of Associate Professor Sotiris Nikoletseas. Moreover, as member of this team I worked at the IoT Lab Project which is a European research program.
In 2013, I completed my undergraduate studies in the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department of the University of Patras, Greece.

Teaching
During my graduate studies at University of Patras and at University of California, Riverside I was a teaching assistant at the following courses:
University of California, Riverside
- Software Construction
- Database Management Systems
University of Patras
- Databases Laboratory
- Introduction to C laboratory
- Architecture laboratory
- Object Oriented Programming laboratory (Java)
Apache AsterixDB
Currently, my research focuses on cost-based query optimization in AsterixDB. AsterixDB is a Big Data Management System, well-known for its rich feature set. I will focus on enabling several rewrite rules, based on cost models derived from statistics information.
Apache VXQuery
I first worked on Apache VXQuery because of my participation in Google Summer of Code 2016 (GSOC 2016). My goal was to add in VXQuery (XML Query Processor) the JSONiq feature. After GSOC, I continued my work with VXQuery and by implementing some rewritter rules, I improved its scalability. Due to that work VXQuery can process with parallelism JSON queries and with strong scale. During Google Summer of Code 2017 , I continued my work on VXQuery, by introducing value, attribute and path indexing for XML data.
IoT Lab Project
As member of the IoT Lab project (which is a European research program) I develop android applications which recognize the (smartphone)user's activity. Using funf framework to schedule the smartphone's sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes) and by processing suitably their readings, it is possible to create a classification model using weka to infer the user's motion (sitting, lying, walking, running).
