• compile from within emacs and have emacs show you the lines in your source file that the compiler complains about,
• debug from within emacs using gdb, and have emacs show the source code that is currently executing.

Debugging run-time memory errors

A useful tool for debugging run-time memory errors (mistakes with pointers, array indices out of bounds, etc) is "valgrind". You can download a binary [here], and you can find documentation [here].
