Textbook: | Computing Essentials 2023 (part of SIMnet) | Labs: |
LearnCS8 (HTML) SIMnet MyITLab (details to follow) |
Textbook:
The textbook is is an e-book and is part of SIMnet. Please see the SIMnet Labs section below. Web-Based Labs:
All of the labs for this calss are web-based and can be completed at any time. In other words, you do not have to do them during the scheduled lab times. However, the TA will be available during the scheduled lab times to assist any students needing help. See below for details on the different labs that must be completed. LearnCS8 (HTML) Labs:
Please read the following instructions carefully as you will need to sign up for 2 different web sites. The LearnCS8 labs are a set of labs where you create web pages using HTML. The instructions for each lab come from a site called LearnCS8.com, but the work itself is done using a second web site called Amazon Web Services (AWS). You will first need to sign up on the LearnCS8 site. The cost is $19.99. Note: The site uses Paypal for payment, but you do not need to have or create a Paypal account; Paypal has a "purchase as guest" option that allows you to enter a credit card number. You will complete the LearnCS8 labs on another web site called AWS (Amazon Web Services). Though anybody can create a normal AWS account for free, we are using "special" UCR AWS accounts that allow you to share your workspace with your TA. Click the following link for instructions on how to setup your AWS account: If you have problems setting up your account, please contact a TA for assistance. Once you have setup your AWS account, you will need to use a special URL in order to login to AWS to do your labs. Note: If you forget your AWS password, you can reset it by repeating steps 0 - 4 from the AWS Setup Instructions. Note: Once you have completed the first HTML (LearnCS8.com) lab, you must share your AWS workspace with your TA. Following are instructions on how to do this. SIMnet Labs:
A number of labs will be done using a website called SIMnet. Access to this site, which also includes the textbook, is being granted for free this quarter by the publisher. Click here to watch a short video on how to register for the site. On the page where you are asked for your STUDENT ID, enter your UCR Net ID, not your Student ID. For example, if your UCR email address is abc001@ucr.edu, your Net ID is abc001. Note that free SIMnet accounts normally expire after 14 days, so you might see a message regarding that on the site. However, the free accounts for this class will not expire and will be available the entire quarter. The labs can be accessed from the ASSIGNMENTS link at the top of the page. MyITLabs Labs:
A number of labs will be done using a website called MyITLab. Access to this site, which also includes the textbook, is being granted for free this quarter by the publisher. Click here for instructions on signing up for MyITLab.

All labs are web-based, which means they must be completed and submitted using a web browser. You should use the latest version of Google Chrome to do the labs. Using any other browser, espcially Internet Explorer, is highly discouraged.
You will need to share your AWS workspace before the due date for the first lab (i.e. Thursday, June 24, 11:59 PM). See the link above for instructions on how to do this.
No late lab assignments will be accepted without a doctor's note or other evidence of a serious situation which prevented you from being able to do school work for several days.
The following table shows the lab assignments for each week.
