Given our scarceness of resources, it is important that we build on
the work of others. The Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) provides a
model and Java interfaces for nearly all of the relevant services.
There are six implementations of OKI in various stages of completion
and availability:
- CourseWork at Stanford (already available for download as of now 8/19/03)
- KnowledgeStar (a.k.a., Stellar) at MIT (to be available in September 2003)
- CHEF at Univ. of Mich. (operational as of now but download status is
currently unknown by me). CHEF is not really part of the OKI master
project.
- CARET (University of Cambridge)
- VUE (Tufts University)
- Oncourse (Indiana University)
BlackBoard claims that it will embrace OKI, but I don't know the
status of that activity.
According to the timeline for
OKI,2.16 the project
should be entering the dissemination phase (i.e., Phase 2) and they
should welcome our adoption and participation.
